This is a great show now on in Provincetown. Christine Triebert is an abstract photographer who lives in Vermont. Her work falls well into my category of how the arts help us to heal from traumas of various kinds. The destruction wrought by hurricanes and other natural disasters can help us reach into the depths of our imaginations. As a photographer myself, I am in awe of the beauty she has created from the detritus of massive flooding and destruction in her small Vermont community.

IF YOU ARE IN MASSACHUSETTS, ESPECIALLY THE CAPE, GO AND SEE THIS SHOW.

The arts have very powerful roles to play in the development and renaissance of our communities. Detroit is an example of a community that is struggling to renew itself after it has suffered one economic blow after another over the years.

This is just one example of how the arts, in the hands of creative and ambitious young people, is helping one section of Detroit to become a vibrant and active area to live and grow businesses. Its focus on the multicultural foundations of the community show the strengths that come from diversity and the creative imagination.

We simply cannot underestimate the importance of music in human life. Kudos to Professor Jayne Standley of Florida State University for winning this first international award for music therapy research. As a result of her over 20 years of research, she has made a difference in the lives of many premature babies and their families.

Professor Standley is a professor of music and has an appointment in the medical school as well.

Among the organizations working with veterans to develop and engage their creativity as they return to civilian life, Military Experience and the Arts is outstanding. They don’t just solicit, review, and publish the work of veterans; they help them to develop their visual and literary skills with the assistance of advisers and editors.

Blue Nostalgia is one of their internet publications showcasing veterans’ work. Check this out and look at their website, which offers a comprehensive collection of their publications of both visual and literary art.

FutureEd Saturday: Belmont’s music therapy degree designed to soothe

All the research that shows the powerful impact of music on people’s lives casts a searching spotlight on the availability and quality of education programs in arts therapy, whether these focus in single art as music and dance therapy programs do or takes an interdisciplinary approach in the “creative arts” or “expressive arts” therapy.

There is a real need for more arts therapy programs, both in the individual arts and the interdisciplinary approaches. This combining of arts and wellness opens up whole new career areas for practicing artists.

The report here examines the new Belmont University degree program. I intend to do a review and report on the state of arts therapy in higher education–my initial small forays into this issue indicates a severe shortage of these programs in most parts of the country.

For families who are caring for loved ones with various forms of dementia, the need for practical information and resources is great.

The National Center for Creativity in Aging is working on a project to develop a Caregiving Resource Guide for these families. I wanted to let my readers know about this and encourage them to support its development and watch for its publication. I will monitor developments and update as new information emerges.

High Point Wednesday: More Hospitals Use the Healing Powers of Public Art – WSJ

One of the most important developments in the use of the arts in healing has been the integration of the arts into all aspects of contemporary medicine, especially in the hospital setting. There has been a growing realization, supported by the leadership of Children’s Hospitals across the nation, of the importance of every aspect of the hospital experience and care for patients, families, and hospital staff. There are dynamic examples in several cities, but Boston leads the pack in the holistic approach to medicine that has grown there over the last few decades.

It is nice to see the mainstream press taking note of this, with this article in the Wall Street Journal and many recent ones in the New York Times.

I think that it is impossible to underestimate the potential power of music in our lives. I could just post music as healing, development, growth, etc every day, but it is important to see the critical value of music in the broader context of all the arts.

This share from the Lebanon Democrat offers an example of how music is helping babies to grow and develop better.
