As I am collecting stories for my book “Shaping Lives,Transforming Communities: Creative Expression and the Dance of Life,” I am exploring how the arts and creativity are being used to help young people recovering from traumatic experiences. These experiences are not confined to war or major catastrophes but can come as a part of everyday life in far too many communities.
There is a growing understanding of the importance of so-called “trauma-sensitive” approaches in schools, especially those serving students raised in poverty and in families where abuse occurs. It is good to know that Massachusetts is one of the sates leading the way in using these approaches with children.
