The power of music is one of the major themes of my book in progress Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life. There are dozens of posts on this site supporting music in all its dimensions from active participation through performance to active listening. Certain organizations are leaders across the generations in bringing the power of music to people.

The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, has been a catalyst for developing opportunities for older adults to learn and play music in ensembles through its New Horizons Camps. Over 100 programs are active here in the US alone. NPR’s Next Avenue introduces us to this work in today’s post.

Those of you familiar with this curated information blog know that I am following the power of music in our lives across the world. Music as healer reveals itself in all its glory in situations of trauma and war.

Today’s post comes from Ari Shapiro at NPR’s All Things Considered and is the story of an extraordinary young woman from Iraq who is developing an orchestra under the most difficult of circumstances. Zuhal Sultan founded the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq six years ago. Because of the rise of ISIS, there is currently a hiatus in its activity and Sultan is managing it from Glasgow, Scotland online. Read and listen to the moving story of music in the midst of war.

For her work, Zuhal Sultan has been named Visionary of the Year by the Euphrates Institute.

This is a good time to look at the issues related to active aging. Whatever your health, keeping as active as possible is important. As seniors we need to be active in mind, spirit, and body. Take the time to review what you are doing and what you want to do in all three areas.

The Dot is another resource you should consider. The Creativity Post, where I found this information, is also a treasure chest for those who believe in creativity and a child-centered approach to learning.

This “One book has sparked a movement that is creating a worldwide network of like-minded adults who value creativity in learning and believe in the human side of educating.”
