This is the last in a short series of posts on the healing power of the arts in the lives of veterans of the armed forces. Over the last several years the arts have become more integrated into the formal medical practice of the Department of Defense.

At a ceremony earlier in November at the Pentagon, members of the Air Force presented and discussed the art they created in the process of recovery. Learn more about the Warrior Care Healing Arts Program, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Defense.

One of the recurring themes in my book in progress, Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life, is the power of the arts in healing and the revolution taking place as western medical practice integrates the arts in new ways. Just as the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense in the US is doing this, so are veterans agencies in Australia and Canada, among other places.

Today’s post introduces the new Australian program for returning members of the armed forces and veterans, ARRTS: Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Team Work, and Skills. Participants will be able to participate in the performing arts, creative writing, music, and the visual arts as part of their medical protocols. I will be tracking this program as it progresses.

Using the Expressive Arts in healing is becoming more common in military settings across the world. One of the Resource Guides I am developing is The Arts and Healing Resource Guide  for Veterans. This week I will be posting several examples of the how the arts are being used with military veterans here in the US and in Canada and Australia.

Established in 2011, the NEA/Military Healing Arts Partnership between the Department of Defense and National Endowment for the Arts, has developed and expanded since then. Learn about how the VA is using the power of the arts to help veterans return to civilian life.

We cannot underestimate the importance of music in the development of children. The decline of music and the other arts in schools over the last 25 years has had negative repercussions we will be coping with for decades.

This article from Music.Mic’s Tom Barnes summarizes the benefits of music demonstrated by research overt the years. It should be read by every parent, educator, and politician.

Over the last several years it has become more common for various arts therapies to become a part of the medical program for veterans. The Veterans Administration recognizes arts therapies as part of its treatment protocols. One of the Resource Guides I am developing is for Veterans, the Arts, and Healing.

Today’s post comes from Canada and tells the story of Stephen Clews, who served in Afghanistan.

This is a follow-up to my earlier post today. Cathy Malchiodi’s regular blog on Psychology Today offers an interview with Shaun NcNiff, one of the most important leaders in the expressive arts therapy world of our time. In the interview, Dr. Malchiodi explores Professor McNiff’s new book, Imagination in Action: Secrets to Unleashing Creative Expression.

Together with his earlier works, this new publication forms an essential overview of the field of the expressive therapies and their potential power in our lives. I cannot recommend his work highly enough. Put it on your Christmas list, put all of his works on your list for inspiration and understanding for creative action in the new year!

The role of the arts in child development is a recurring theme in my book in progress “Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life.” We need education systems that put exploring and the arts at the heart of their designs.

Today’s post from PBS Parents by Grace Hwang Lynch offers a helpful overview for parents on the importance of the arts in their children’s development.

Joel Bergner is an American-born descendant of Jewish refugees. Brought up in Illinois, he is an extraordinary artist and social activist who is using art to assist young people and their families living in stressful and traumatic situations.

Today’s post introduces you to his work at the Za’atari Syrian Refugee Camp in northern Jordan. At a time when politicians and others would divide us, examine and reflect on the work of an American artist who understands the power of the arts in healing and the wisdom of empathy and compassion for others.
