      As the United States finally gets it right by putting the arts into the core curriculum, Great Britain is pursuing a disastrous policy of down-playing the importance of the arts in education. Education policy in the UK flies in the face of everything we know about human development and the trend toward privatizing education is a recipe for unmitigated disaster.

     Michelle Hanson’s essay in The Guardian should be required reading for every politician in Whitehall. In 40 years of following education in the UK, I have never seen a government who understood less about what is needed for kids to flourish.
