Museums in the 21st century are expanding their missions far beyond their origins; the range of programs and possibilities for the public, including those with disabilities both physical and mental, would astonish many of their founders. Part of this is practical–to survive they need to change–but there is also a recognition of the possibilities the arts offer to people of all ages and abilities.

Today’s post from The Guardian focuses on a small group of museums shortlisted for the 2016 Museum of the Year award in the UK. I will be posting at another time about innovations in museums here in the United States.

“From a Scottish country estate to a psychiatric hospital, the Museum of the Year shortlist is announced this week. Tracy Chevalier, Grayson Perry, Norman Foster, Antony Gormley and John Akomfrah champion their favourites”
