     Prevention is always the better approach, no matter what issue we are considering. When it comes to the healthy development of young children, investment in their welfare should be the foundation of public policy. That this is rarely so leads to many of social problems we face every day.

     Today’s post from the Altarum Institute raises key questions about our commitment to early childhood development and reviews the present stage of our knowledge of current practice. It also raises key issues about what we should be assessing, beyond the narrow focus on intellectual development. In too many areas, including that of early childhood, we are using the “easy to measure” rather than the more significant and complex indicators to make decisions on programs that work.
