Encore is a wonderful organization that has been supporting many options for older people to go in new directions and to contribute in a host of ways to the welfare of our communities. It is a leader in the fight against “ageism” in society. Today’s post shares examples of how people over 50 are becoming entrepreneurs in both the business and social sectors of society. This story from The Guardian offers an introduction to the growing trend of new directions for life at 50 and beyond!

Shaping Our Communities, Transforming With Local Ideas:

In my research for my book in progress Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life one key idea becomes clearer by the day–the really important and lasting changes in personal and community development bubble up from within the individual or community. They emerge in the context of everyday life and action. Nowhere is this more important than in the transforming of communities. The development of Gate City Arts in Holyoke, Massachusetts is an inspiring example of how people make their communities better.

I love–love–love this list of books about the shaping of the communities we live in. It came to me through Strong Towns, a great organization, but it is the work of Curbed. Since it starts with Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, a work that has shaped my own creative imagination for decades, I couldn’t resist sharing the list here. Just reading through the 101 titles will spur your own ideas about community development and the world in which we live. You might also find the ideal present for someone on your gift list.
