Sisler High School in Winnepeg is defying the norm in secondary education and offering a creative approach to their students. The best high schools I know in the US and Canada are those offering opportunities in special areas that are both deep and broad.  Sisler shares the same spirit as magnet career academies I have worked on in other communities. You might find some great ideas here for your own school.

“There’s a whole lot of creativity happening at Sisler High School, much of it found in the Interactive Digital Media (IDM) program, where students get to live out their dreams.”

Lessons are best learned through stories. This is the story of a visiting artist in an early childhood program in Westport, County Mayo in Ireland. I wanted to share this with you not just because it demonstrates the importance of creativity in early childhood education but also because i have spent a many weeks in Westport, one of my favorite Irish towns. There are links to other examples of  integrating the arts in education and lessons here for any early childhood program.

Unschooling is an approach to homeschooling children used, in whole or in part, by many parents opting out of traditional education. This is an excellent introduction and overview of what it means to follow an “unschooling” path to learning. It was originally published in November 2015 by Happiness Is Here, the best blog about unschooling on the internet.

Inhabitat is a wonderful resource for ideas, information, and projects that are working to solve the major challenges we face. Buckminster Fuller may be long gone but there are creative people everywhere working away at making a better world for all of us. The team at the Venus Project, which combines architecture with social design, has completed a 21-acre research center in Florida to continue their work. Well worth checking out!

Do you know that a million seconds is almost 12 DAYS and a billion seconds is almost 32 YEARS!

This is somewhat different from my usual post, but extremely important. Most people have no concept of the difference between say a million and a billion. This is a wonderful read that will help you to understand the real differences here. We make political and practical decisions every day based usually on our NOT understanding big numbers!
