The Settlement Music School in Philadelphia is one of the Beacons of Hope I am featuring in the first of the resource guides in my Living Through Creativity Series. It is one member of the 10-organization collaborative in Philly called PMAY, the Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth. The Andrew Mellon Foundation has just announced a grant for over $2 million to the Alliance to support making music lessons available to all young people in the community. Given the central role that music plays in human development, this is an important model for other foundations to consider. Kudos to the Mellon Foundation for a gift that will keep on giving as these young people mature!
“Settlement Music School is one of the largest and oldest community schools of the arts in the United States. With six locations in South, West and Northeast Philadelphia, Germantown, Willow Grove and Camden, New Jersey, the School provides 10,000 weekly services of individual lessons, classes and activities in music, dance and visual arts to children and adults, and awards more than $2 million annually in financial aid and scholarships.”
