The Veterans Administration includes arts therapy among the accepted elements of the protocols for veterans’ medical care. In addition to the formal VA programs at Walter Reed and around the country, there are many other projects that have been initiated and are run by veterans themselves. Warrior Songs is one of these, developed by a Wisconsin veteran of the Iraq war. Read about his inspiring story.

Farnham Street’s Brain Food is one of the very thoughtful blogs I turn to for interesting approaches to personal development. I have posted from his mental models series before, but this post is where you should begin if you are serious about using mental models in your daily life. All of us use them, but we are often not fully aware that we are doing this. This is the best introduction to mental models I have found. Adapt the Farnham Street Latticework of Mental Models in your life.

***Transforming Education Series: Early Childhood Education***

Sometimes I just want to sigh and shake my head because we still don’t get it–kids should be learning through play at least until the age of 8. I believe they should learn from play all their lives–but that is for a book. This report from the Washington Post on a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research adds to our already strong knowledge that we should not continue to redefine kindergarten as first grade. Thanks to Valerie Strauss of the Washington Post for continuing to follow this vital topic.

One of the most important developments in healthcare over the last 20 years has been the increasing integration of the arts into the formal healthcare system. Most of the best hospitals in the country, including those associated with medical schools, have arts therapy programs and arts as part of the total hospital environment. Duke University Hospital has had an arts therapy program since 1978, possible one of the earliest in the US. (I am going to do some tracking of the history of these programs and will update the information.) Today’s post gives a brief overview of the Duke program and its impact on patients.
