We have robust bodies of research about how the arts can improve our lives, from individual health through communities recovering from traumatic incidents. Createquity offers us a comprehensive overview of the present state of research. Gradually–too slowly for me–the arts are being integrated into health care in formal and informal ways. The great children’s hospitals are in the forefront of integrating all the arts into both the physical setting and treatment protocols, while arts areas such as dance are being used to treat people with Parkinson’s disease. For both individuals and communities, the arts are life-enhancing and central to wellness.

The integration of the arts into healthcare is a major theme of my book in progress, Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life. Each community needs to find ways of making this a reality. Today’s post tells the story of a relatively new venture in Louisville, Kentucky. You may find some ideas there that you can apply in your own community.

If you have special projects linking the arts to healthcare in your town, share them with us through the Contact Form below.

“Creating equitable places and healthy people: that’s the mission of Louisville, Kentucky-based, artist-innovation company IDEAS xLab (IDEAS). Together with its education and training nonprofit for artists, Creative Agents of Change Foundation, IDEAS has created a framework that helps corporations and communities re-frame challenges and discover new opportunities by leveraging the dynamic capacity of artists to innovate. IDEAS was launched in 2012 as an exhibition series designed to connect contemporary artists in Central Appalachian and Southern States with international artist networks. Today, IDEAS has morphed into a new framework for social entrepreneurship centered around artists as strategic human resources on two parallel fronts, civic and corporate innovation. The ultimate goal is creating “shared value” programs between the two.”

Arts Professional, a UK publication, shares short case studies of arts projects related to improving the health and well-being of people.

Craftspace, an organization located in Birmingham UK, has sponsored two projects that link “making” with health and well-being. Craft in Mind worked with young people with mental health issues in a pottery workshop, while Making My Home focused on young people at risk for homelessness. Craftspace is working with the University of Birmingham School of Education to expand understanding of the relationship between “making” and wellness.

10488167_909689462378050_8613226824284615281_nThere is much wisdom in listening to the questions of those who follow different traditions. The arts have such an important role in the development of wellness and our physical, moral, spiritual, and intellectual human systems. Word about the acknowledgement of the central role of the arts in health and well-being by the elite medical professions through organizations such as the Foundation for Arts and Healing and the Global Alliance for Arts and Health needs to be shared with people everywhere. This is one good share.
