While the experts talk about the problems of our current economic systems, communities across the world are creating opportunities for developing sustainable and more equitable economies. I think this is another strong argument for my contention that the solutions are going to come from local efforts multiplied many times over. Today’s post from Shareable is a great introduction to what is happening in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The Arts Driving Economic Development in Paducah, Kentucky:

The arts can be powerful drivers of economic development; they are too seldom included as an acknowledged and serious part of a community’s planning for the future. In spite of frequent nods to the idea of the “creative economy,” most politicians and planners do not take it seriously.

Paducah, Kentucky is a small city with big ideas that has included creativity and the arts as an equal partner in community and economic development. I will be focusing on Paducah in my book in progress “Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life.”

Today’s post is the Paducah section of the UNESCO annual report on its network of creative cities across the globe. It introduces you to creative Paducah and to the international network of creative cities developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

A large section of “Shaping Our Lives, Transforming Our Communities” focuses on the role of creativity and the arts in the economic, social, educational, and spiritual development of our communities. This report from UNESCO is a critical one for all interested in the development of life in communities to read and share.

One of the projects of UNESCO is the Creative Cities Network,  established in 2004 and growing each year. Paducah, Kentucky is one of three US cities awarded special status in the group. This small Kentucky city has used the arts and its Artist Relocation Program as the centerpiece for economic development. I will be featuring Paducah in my book and in the Community Resource Guide for the Arts and Economic Development. This guide will be the second in the series “Living through Creativity.” The first one is the Veterans’ Resource Guide on the Arts and Healing.

I am looking for the stories of other communities using creativity and the arts in economic development, in addition to Paducah. If you know of one, please use the contact form below to tell me about it, or email kylegroup2@yahoo.com
