Warning–this is a very long read, but worth the effort. As I have been working on the design for the School of Creative Aging, it has become very clear that real accomplishment bears very little relationship to chronological age. Today’s post shares in detail the the story of two extraordinary people who made major contributions to our world later in their lives.

One of the interesting aspects of our world is not just that more people are living longer, but that older people contribute actively in all domains of life and the professions. Today’s post is just one of many recent studies that demonstrate the power  and wisdom that is abundant among older people across the world. We need to fight ageism in our society and recognize the contributions of people of all ages and abilities.

With the White House Conference on Aging coming up next week, I will focus on creative aging in my next several posts. My book in progress “Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life” emphasizes that we are capable of accomplishment at any age. The School of Creative Aging, the new project of The Kyle Group, will offer support and encouragement to individuals, organizations, and communities in designing and developing new ways to support creativity and innovation throughout our lives.

Later this week I will share the exciting roles played by elders in entrepreneurship: the quote from Colonel Harlan Sanders reminds us that his most important contributions came after he was 65.

Among European artists of the 20th century, none is more famous for the works created during illness and old age than Henri Matisse, one of my favorites. In this post from The Healing Power of Art & Artists, a wonderful Manhattan-based resource, we view and are enticed into the very special world of Matisse’s cutouts. Enjoy this glimpse into a very special world and be inspired to new heights in your own creative work.

Please use the contact form to tell us about other creative elders and their work.
