          One of the most important developments in healthcare over the last 20 years has been the increasing integration of the arts into the formal healthcare system. Most of the best hospitals in the country, including those associated with medical schools, have arts therapy programs and arts as part of the total hospital environment. Duke University Hospital has had an arts therapy program since 1978, possible one of the earliest in the US. (I am going to do some tracking of the history of these programs and will update the information.) Today’s post gives a brief overview of the Duke program and its impact on patients.

          As the arts in health movement grows across the world, dance is taking a leading role in the treatment of challenges from dementia to seniors at risk of falling to Parkinson’s Disease.
