Providing the experience, knowledge, and skills of music is one of the most important things we can do to promote learning and healthy growth in young people. The El Sistema program has inspired and helped to develop similar programs around the world. Today’s post is a thoughtful letter to teachers in these programs from the authors of Playing for Their Lives.

The featured images are the work of Iris Grace Halmshaw, a young English girl who is a brilliant painter who is also on the autism spectrum and strongly influenced by music. Check out her website, http://www.irisgracepainting.com

The Settlement Music School in Philadelphia is one of the Beacons of Hope I am featuring in the first of the resource guides in my Living Through Creativity Series. It is one member of the 10-organization collaborative in Philly called PMAY, the Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth. The Andrew Mellon Foundation has just announced a grant for over $2 million to the Alliance to support making music lessons available to all young people in the community. Given the central role that music plays in human development, this is an important model for other foundations to consider. Kudos to the Mellon Foundation for a gift that will keep on giving as these young people mature!

Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road project is an extraordinary creation, both in intent and execution. While it brings together musicians from across the world, it also aims that they retain their individuality while creating harmonies together. For the last four years The Music of Strangers, a documentary about the Silk Road Ensemble, has been in development. Today’s post from The Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald is a review of the recently released film. It offers insight and thoughts about the work, as well as a link to the video trailer.
