Music is medicine, the power of music to help us heal is finally being recognized by mainstream medicine. This is a recurring theme in my book in progress Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life.

This post from the Didge Project is a great introduction to the various ways music is becoming part of medical treatment.

It is no secret to regular readers of this blog that I believe we need a total transformation of American education. While we work toward that, it is important to make visible the good things that are happening in schools everywhere.

Today’s story comes from the Marysville School in Portland, Oregon and shows the incredible difference that an approach called MindUp has made in the lives of children and teachers as they recover from the traumatic fire that destroyed the old school.

The Expressive Therapy Institute is an excellent resource for information, ideas, and training about using the expressive therapies for children and adults who have suffered trauma, from whatever source.

One of the most important developments in the healing professions since World War II is the emerging of the arts as therapy and the training of expressive arts therapists. This new website is a contribution to the practical information base for all arts therapists.

I recently discovered the Global Musical Park Movement. It brings together so many of the recurring themes in my book in progress, Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life: the central role of play in all human development, music as essential to all our lives, the power of music and play to bring us together.

Through a series of short videos Freenotes Harmony Park, a Colorado-based business, introduces you to various aspects of the movement. I suggest you also go to other sections of their website for additional information and resources.

One of the recurring themes in my book in progress, Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life, is the power of the arts in healing and the revolution taking place as western medical practice integrates the arts in new ways. Just as the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense in the US is doing this, so are veterans agencies in Australia and Canada, among other places.

Today’s post introduces the new Australian program for returning members of the armed forces and veterans, ARRTS: Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Team Work, and Skills. Participants will be able to participate in the performing arts, creative writing, music, and the visual arts as part of their medical protocols. I will be tracking this program as it progresses.

As we inch our way toward the Fourth of July weekend this is a good time to reflect on the need of people everywhere to seek and find new beginnings. Across the world hundreds of thousands of refugees are suffering from the traumas that made them leave their homelands and the further sufferings of refugee camps and incarceration in refugee centers.

One of the themes of my book in progress “Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life” is how the arts have the power to help those suffering from traumatic events to heal. Today’s post offers you some insight into the impact of trauma on the lives of refugees around the world.

The Refugee Art project comes from the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. This post shares the work of refugees from many nations in camps around the world. What are we doing to make the lives of present day refugees more humane?

Please use the contact form below to share information on the arts helping refugees.
