Movement is good for all of us; for young children, whether or not they are on the autism spectrum, it is essential for learning. This is one of the reasons why the traditional classroom of sit and work, sit and work is so detrimental to the healthy development of body and mind.

Equine therapy helps children with many different issues; it is being used to help children on the autism spectrum to learn. The Horse Boy and The Long Ride Home tell the story of one family and how they have developed a method of kinetic learning and brain building through their experience with their son. Horse Boy World is located near Austin, Texas and partners with universities in developing and assessing its approach.

I want to thank Arabella Carter-Johnson, mother of Iris Grace Halmshaw, for the information about this project.

Regular readers of this blog will be familiar with the story of Iris Grace Halmshaw, the young girl in the UK whose life I have been following for two years now. She is home-schooled by her parents and they have developed wonderful activities, including the Young Explorer’s Club, for Iris and her friends.

Two things stand out in the development of Iris Grace, her extraordinary gift for painting and her deep relationship with Thula, her Maine coon cat. This is a pictorial essay of Iris Grace at work with her paintings, ably assisted by Thula.

I know I have posted numerous items about Iris Grace, the young painter from the UK with autism, but this is a particularly informative one from CNN. As part of my research on the arts and healing, I have been following the life of Iris Grace as her family helps her to develop at home, building her learning experiences through her interests. You can’t help but be fascinated by Iris Grace, her art, and Thula, her cat friend and protector.

There are many lessons for us from watching Iris Grace develop over the years. Educators and others working with special needs students need to pay special attention. All of the arts are integrated into Iris Grace’s development. The detailed documentation by her mother of her growing up is an important contribution to our understanding of what works with children. Get the book!

Regular readers of this blog know that for two years I have been following the adventures of Iris Grace, a young girl with autism in the UK. The story of how her parents are helping her to grow through exploring, creativity, and the friendship of her Maine coon cat Thula was published in the UK last week. Today’s post offers insight into the development of Iris Grace and her relationship to her animal friend.

I have posted often  on the experiences of Iris Grace as she develops because I believe that what her family is doing to create a caring and creative environment for her has many lessons for early childhood education everywhere. We have gone dreadfully wrong in the US in making preschool a shadow and reflection of the traditional academic environment of the elementary school. Indeed, that environment is wrong and doing great harm to children as well.

The images here are all from Iris Grace Painting.

For well over a year I have been following the development of a young girl with autism in the UK. Iris Grace, together with her Maine coon cat Thula, has become an inspiration to many across the world. Later this week Penguin will publish her mother’s book on how this little girl, diagnosed with autism at age two, is finding herself through exploration, play, and the help of her wonderful Thula.

Iris Grace by Arabella Carter-Johnson will be available in print and other formats in the UK and on Kindle here in the US on February 25. The print edition may also be ordered through the British Book Depository.

The two videos in this post will give you some insight into the lives of Iris and Thula. As a professional in education, I believe that the documentation of Iris Grace’s growing up and flowering offer valuable clues to how we should be shaping early childhood education for all children.
