A few months ago I published a post about the Art School in a Karachi prison. For my book in progress, Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life, I have collecting examples of how the arts help prisoners in the process of rehabilitation and return to the community.

Today I was delighted to find this letter to the Bureau of Prisons from Congressman Ted Lieu of the LA area and 19 others encouraging the Bureau to expand and extend the use of the arts as a rehabilitative tool in the US federal prison system. This is an important move forward and one which I applaud and encourage.

“FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                WASHINGTON –  Today, Congressman Ted Lieu (D | Los Angeles County), along with 19 other members of Congress, sent a letter to the Bureau of Prisons encouraging that they expand arts education and engagement in their prisons.  The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is currently supporting, in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, programs in six federal prisons. While a worthwhile effort, these comprise only four percent of the federal prisons nationwide.”
