Most teachers are not prepared to deal with students who have been through traumatic crises such as war and natural disasters. The School of International Training in Vermont partners with Musicians Without Borders to train people from across the world how to integrate music into outreach to communities and young people who have been the victims of war and disaster. Today’s post is a great introduction to their work. The features images are from Clowns Without Borders USA, who are engaged in similar work.

In the focus on post-election fears in the US and the tragedy in Aleppo, we tend to forget about the traumas faced by people in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian youth orchestra being developed, in partnership with Germany, will offer opportunities for healing and new beginnings in the coming years. Kudos to all those responsible for recognizing the transforming power of music.

Yo-Yo Ma and the Healing Power of Music:

I first heard Yo-Yo Ma play in December of 1972, just after the re-election of Richard Nixon as president. From 1968 on we were going through the throes of the anti-Vietnam war protests. I sat beside a dear friend and fellow faculty member in the music room at the president of the university’s annual faculty Christmas party. He was in the throes of making a decision i knew nothing about then; I was captivated by the brother/sister duo who made the evening magic. The decades have passed; my friend is long in his grave. The magic of Yo-Yo Ma’s music has become a healing force across the world in good times and bad. This post, a report from the Singapore Straits Times, reminds us of the enduring power of music and the essential goodness of the great musicians in our land. Yo-Yo, we need your music now more than ever. (Thanks to Bridgelight for the images.)
