Music is the first of the arts therapies that the federal government turned to after World War II to treat what we now know as PTSD in active duty and retired veterans. Music therapy owes its early development in the post-war world to this. Today’s post from the National Endowment for the Arts is a great introduction to the history and practice of music therapy on medicine.

One of the most successful education programs supported by the US federal government is not in the Department of Education but in the National Endowment for the Arts and its partner institutions in both public and private sectors. It is the Turnaround Arts program located across the country in many different states. I have posted stories from individual schools in the program on this site; today I want you to explore the entire program as it has developed over the years. What these schools are doing is what every school in the nation should be doing. Integrating the arts is one of the foundations for true school transformation.

Music is medicine is a truism best understood through the stories of those who have experienced its healing power. I am not so slowly realizing that I need to do a separate book on the healing power of music. Today’s post shares the story of one veteran whose life was changed through using music therapy as part of his treatment. Did you know that arts therapy is part of the treatment protocol at Veterans Administration hospitals?

This is an important article from Psychology Today by Cathy Malchiodi, a distinguished expressive arts therapist and author. It includes links to many important articles and summaries of research on the arts in health. As the federal government destroys links to much key research, it it critical to save the information for future use.

For several years now the National Endowment for the Arts has been supporting a very successful program to work with at-risk schools using the arts to support learning and success. This morning’s story comes from the schools of East Palo Alto, which serve primarily students from families living in poverty. The program at every school partners with outstanding artists–in this instance David Hockney and Frank Gehry. We need to work to see that this upport continues.

One of the most important developments in healthcare is the integration of the arts into approaches to healing and wellness. Often it is initiatives by community groups that support and place emphasis on how the arts can contribute to wellness in individuals and the community. We need to be able to assess the effectiveness of these community-based arts and wellness programs. The National Endowment for the Arts has just released a free guide to community research in arts and health projects. This is an important step forward in understanding how the arts can improve health and wellness. Please share this with anyone involved in arts and health projects in your community.
