Now that spring is well along in the northern hemisphere and fall in southern, we should all take time to explore nature, whether for you that means woods, mountains, or water. For me exploring woods or sitting on jetties by the ocean are my two places for nature and personal exploration. Today’s post is an insightful essay on the good things that come to us from spending time in nature.

When i was growing up, two places had a profound influence on me–the ocean at Scituate lighthouse and the woodland behind our house. This is a beautiful series of images of unusual forests from around the world. I would love to explore them!

David Suzuki is an extraordinary Canadian philosopher and environmentalist. In today’s post he looks at stress in our lives, especially those of us who live in cities, and shares the important effect that time spent in nature can have on our overall well-being. Take the lessons to heart and find ways to spend more time in natural settings.

“For the most part, our brains didn’t evolve in cities. But in a few decades, almost 70 per cent of the world’s people will live in urban environments. Despite the prosperity we associate with cities, urbanization presents a major health challenge. Cities, with their accelerated pace of life, can be stressful. The results are seen in the brains and behaviour of those raised in cities or currently living in one.”

Nature is good for us. When I was growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, I spent hours exploring the woods behind our house. It was a very happy time and left me with a love for woods and flowers and small streams. Today’s post shares some of the benefits we get from spending time in nature.

“All those who love Nature she loves in return, and will richly reward, not perhaps with the good things, as they are commonly called, but with the best things of this world-not with money antitles, horses and carriages, but with bright and happy thoughts, contentment and peace of mind.” ~John Lubbock

Gazing at the wonders of nature feeds the spirit for a new week ahead. We should begin as we hope to continue, feeding the imagination and feasting the eyes on things ordinarily hidden from us. This time lapse video of corals is the perfect way to begin a week of creativity and innovation.

The images in the blog are all paintings by Monet, an artist whose singular vision has given us some of the most beautiful of all art works. All of them involve water, to complement the video of the corals.

“Corals and sponges are fascinating marine organisms with a much slower pace of life, but this stunning video brings us up to speed on their beauty.”
