David Suzuki is an extraordinary Canadian philosopher and environmentalist. In today’s post he looks at stress in our lives, especially those of us who live in cities, and shares the important effect that time spent in nature can have on our overall well-being. Take the lessons to heart and find ways to spend more time in natural settings.

“For the most part, our brains didn’t evolve in cities. But in a few decades, almost 70 per cent of the world’s people will live in urban environments. Despite the prosperity we associate with cities, urbanization presents a major health challenge. Cities, with their accelerated pace of life, can be stressful. The results are seen in the brains and behaviour of those raised in cities or currently living in one.”

Nature is good for us. When I was growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, I spent hours exploring the woods behind our house. It was a very happy time and left me with a love for woods and flowers and small streams. Today’s post shares some of the benefits we get from spending time in nature.

“All those who love Nature she loves in return, and will richly reward, not perhaps with the good things, as they are commonly called, but with the best things of this world-not with money antitles, horses and carriages, but with bright and happy thoughts, contentment and peace of mind.” ~John Lubbock

Spring is a wonderful time to begin new creative work. The best resource during these first weeks is nature itself. When I was growing up we had a woodland in back of our house and I spent hours exploring it, especially in the early spring when everything is just coming to life.

Creativity in Therapy is an inspiring website authored by an art therapist in Austin, Texas. The segment I am sharing with you today is a practical guide to nature-inspired art with both text and several videos. It is a treasure trove of great ideas!

The images on my post are all one of my favorite resources, Old Moss Woman’s Secret Garden.

Over the last several weeks I have shared several posts on healing gardens–natural woodland places; botanical gardens; private and public gardens of many kinds; the glass gardens of Dale Chihuly, standing alone or enhancing planned and natural gardens.

Brain Pickings is one of my favorite sources of good reads to share. In today’s post, Maria Popova introduces us to Robin Wall Kimmerer’s “Braiding Sweetgrass,” a blend of science, art, philosophy, and storytelling well worth reading. This post also includes a video interview with Robin Wall Kimmerer. Enjoy!
