          Music is the most powerful of the arts in many ways. I often share posts that speak to the healing power of music, to its integration into traditional medical practice. Today’s post looks at the strong impact music can have on our attitudes toward others not of our own cultural heritage. I found it on Yo-Yo Ma’s blog–he and his Silk Road project embody the power of music to bring people together and to foster understanding among cultures. This study comes out of the University of Arizona.

      This post shares the results of a small trial demonstrating the potential power of using a systems approach, with a person-centered focus, in treating memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients. Since I firmly believe the ONLY valid approach to patient care combines a systems approach with an individual focus, I am a bit surprised that the researchers did not take it for granted that this combination is the ONLY ethical approach to medicine. Having said this, this research reinforces what other studies are finding in looking at the impact of music, the arts, gardening, and other elements of a systems approach to treatment of people with dementia.
