Masks and Transformations, Powerful in Metaphor and Reality:

Masks are incredibly powerful symbols, whether they are physical or metaphorical. I have been fascinated by the relationship between masks and transformation ever since my graduate student days. (My dissertation’s main title was Masks and Metamorphoses.) I am exploring the mask/transformation idea both in my art and in some of my writing.

This post from Renee Phillip’s great site The Healing Power of Art & Artists offers an interesting perspective on masks and identity. Several weeks ago I published information on the mask project used in arts therapy with veterans. I am considering an entire resource guide focused on the potential power of masks in our lives.

The images on this post are from the Butterfly Art Project in Vrygrond, South Africa. The children, often subject to traumatic experiences there, are making and using the masks in traditional African story telling mode.

“The power of masks for transforming identities can be seen in “Becoming Another,” at the Rubin Museum, with colorful artworks from many different cultures.”

Bringing Art and Science Together for Healing

A New Post from Your Curated Information Blog Create & Be Well

The most important developments of our time come at the intersection of art and science. This is a recurring theme in the research for my book in progress Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities: Creative Expression in the Dance of Life. From the work of Harvard’s David Edwards to this morning’s post from The Healing Power of Art & Artists, I keep finding examples of a phenomenon we need to be emphasizing in education, medicine, community development, and other areas of life: Art and Science together are central to all of life and development.

Kelly Milukas, an artist from Rhode Island, is a visiting blogger on The Healing Power of Art & Artists, a very useful source of information for examples of art and healing. She works with the Regenerative Medicine Foundation to develop art installations Keys for the Cure, using the theme of keys and locks to bring the art and science together in the healing process.

The Regenerative Medicine Foundation supports new treatments and therapies based on advances in tissue engineering and regenerative therapies. It is connected to the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina.

Please use the contact form to tell us about how art and science are working together in your community.

A Model for Hospice Care

Bringing creativity and the arts to people at every point in life is all about the quality of living. This is essential from birth through end of life, at whatever age that may occur. The hospice movement has become a model for quality of life as it approaches an end. Many hospice providers include the arts in their services to individuals and families. As we learn more about the important roles the arts play at all stages of development, celebrating model programs helps us all to develop new directions.

In today’s post, courtesy of The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS, Terri Lloyd shares information on the first hospice in America, the Connecticut Hospice, which was also the first to begin an arts program in 1979, with help from the National Endowment for the Arts. Katherine Bloom, the director of the arts program at the hospice, believes “Creativity is a leading life force of humanity.” The Connecticut Hospice offers a full range of arts and complementary therapies both to in-patients and to those at home. It is powerful and important program for other hospices to explore.

Terri Lloyd also gives us a link to an informative website for the Arts At Hospice, Inc. Check this site out. I will include it in a later post.
