Rural schools are often the heart, soul, and life-blood of a community. Too often the discussions about public charter schools center on urban schools; a rural charter school may be the only way a small community can keep a school. This is a very thoughtful and insightful essay on the potential for public charter schools in rural communities. Thanks to The Conversation for sharing it.

***Child Development Series: Journey to Understanding***

Brought to You by My Curated Information Blog, Create & Be Well

Science is a journey that never ends!

If we are ever to get education right–and we certainly haven’t done it yet–we need to understand the best current thinking on child and human development. Just as our school structures are out of date, so is our understanding of how children develop. This needs to be central to all aspects of school design and teacher preparation. Today’s post should be required reading for all school policy makers and schools of education.

We need to rethink and transform how we educate our young people. The growth of home schooling across the world is one sign of this; the failure of so many schools to prepare young people for the future is a warning we all need to heed. Today’s post comes from one of my favorite blogs on home schooling, Happiness is Here. Pass it on!

Play is essential for all human, social, and economic development. It is from the interactions among playing, making, and knowing that all progress emerges. This essay by the distinguished psychologist and educator Peter Gray should be read by every educator, politician, and parent. It is a central issue of our time.

One of the most interesting developments in the home school movement has been the growth of “unschooling,” a concept and practice that follows the interests and development of the child. This is a good brief introduction to the idea from a parent’s perspective, with links to other resources. Explore and enjoy!

One of the most important changes we need to make in schooling is a relatively easy one. Children need physical activity to develop properly; integrating play and more active modes of learning should be a no-brainer in education. Unfortunately, it isn’t. This is an excellent article from The Washington Post. It needs to be read by every school board member and educator in the nation. Our current educational design is actually causing harm to the development of young people.

I want every local, state, and national policy maker in education to read this cogent essay. Our entire education system ignores what we know about how children develop and learn; we have constructed school systems that defy reason, research, and basic decency. This is a powerful analysis, the stronger because it comes from an American teacher who taught in Finland for several years. Tim Walker understands and knows what we need to make our education systems work! Please pass this on to every school board member you know!
