As I continue my research on creative expression in our lives and communities, it has become absolutely clear that if we are to make our communities better places to live, the leadership and ideas must emerge at the local level. The Placemaking Movement is an important force in supporting development within individual communities. While the movement grows and expands worldwide, its effectiveness will always be in the work of individuals and groups, one community at a time.

When I write about “creative expression” in my book and resource guides in progress, I include more than the arts. Creative expression also means ideas, activities. and projects that bring innovation and transformation to our lives and communities. I am looking for communities that have earned my designation of “Beacons of Hope.” Rotterdam in the Netherlands is high on my list. This story from Fast Company offers an inspiring introduction to what a community can do when it sets its mind to it.

Jane Jacobs had extraordinary insight into what makes a community tick. I have already shared a post from Strong Towns on her work. This one comes from another valuable resource, The Project for Public Spaces, and is an insightful essay on Jane’s Walk, established in many different communities to foster awareness of her work.

Jane Jacobs is one of my heroes, her influence is perhaps stringer today than in her lifetime. She understood the city in all its strengths and weaknesses, its wondrous complexity. I will be sharing several posts about her ideas over the next few weeks.

Today’s post is from a favorite organization of mine, Strong Towns. It is well worth reading several times and passing on to others.

The Project for Public Spaces is a valuable resource for making your community a better place to live. One of the reasons I like them so much is that they put people at the heart of their transforming activities and put locals at the heart of the planning and design process. They come not as “saviors” but as partners and collaborators in helping communities to transform themselves.
