            Barefoot College. founded in India over 40 years ago, has emerged as an international force in rural development. Through partnerships with the government of India, the United Nations and others, it is spurring education and training for poor, often illiterate, women in bringing solar power to their villages. Today’s post comes from the University of Michigan, which is featuring Barefoot College in its May publications. This is the best overall introduction to this amazing organizations, which is also one of the Beacons of Hope in my first resource guide in the Living Through Creativity series.

          As a former university professor and dean, I am very skeptical about most colleges and universities. One of the exceptions is Bard College, a beacon of hope and innovation for decades. This “microcollege” program combined with Bard’s prisoner outreach project proves that the liberal arts still have meaningful roles to play in this increasingly technological world. Thanks to the Christian Science Monitor for recognizing this.
