Music is the most powerful of the arts in many ways. I often share posts that speak to the healing power of music, to its integration into traditional medical practice. Today’s post looks at the strong impact music can have on our attitudes toward others not of our own cultural heritage. I found it on Yo-Yo Ma’s blog–he and his Silk Road project embody the power of music to bring people together and to foster understanding among cultures. This study comes out of the University of Arizona.

Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road project is an extraordinary creation, both in intent and execution. While it brings together musicians from across the world, it also aims that they retain their individuality while creating harmonies together. For the last four years The Music of Strangers, a documentary about the Silk Road Ensemble, has been in development. Today’s post from The Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald is a review of the recently released film. It offers insight and thoughts about the work, as well as a link to the video trailer. Watch for screenings in your community.

As regular readers of this blog know, I love Yo-Yo Ma and the work of his Silk Road ensemble. I first heard him play, together with his sister, when he was an undergraduate at Harvard. Over the decades he has become a power for good, using music to help heal Boston after the Marathon Bombing and participating in the Turnaround Arts program at individual schools–all while shaping his musical career and creating the Silk Road ensemble. In today’s post he offers the kind of advice to young musicians not often given them in the education setting.

I first heard Yo-Yo Ma play in December of 1972, just after the re-election of Richard Nixon as president. From 1968 on we were going through the throes of the anti-Vietnam war protests. I sat beside a dear friend and fellow faculty member in the music room at the president of the university’s annual faculty Christmas party. He was in the throes of making a decision i knew nothing about then; I was captivated by the brother/sister duo who made the evening magic. The decades have passed; my friend is long in his grave. The magic of Yo-Yo Ma’s music has become a healing force across the world in good times and bad. This post, a report from the Singapore Straits Times, reminds us of the enduring power of music and the essential goodness of the great musicians in our land. Yo-Yo, we need your music now more than ever. (Thanks to Bridgelight for the images.)

Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road project are active participants in education; from the beginning of the project students have had the benefit of learning from this wonderful group. Yo Yo Ma is also active in the Turn-Around Schools partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts.

The Silk Road has recently made available a valuable resource, Sharing Silk Road Connect, that introduces their education program and describes both how it works and how other schools can become part of it. The post includes a direct link to downloading the free text of their resource guide. I also suggest you view their entire website for a better understanding of how they use music to make a better world.
